Athlete of the Month - Doreen Buckner

Wow! I can honestly say I never expected this.

It took me a really long time to even start ‘thinking’ about considering CrossFit. But I’m so happy I did!

I knew Rochelle and Jeff and a few others from TNT but that was only because Jeff was already a member for about three years. Jordy and Elly would babysit and I would swing by to pick them up and text them when I was out front. I didn't want to go in. I had all the excuses to why I didn’t want to join- CrossFit is intimidating, it’s competitive, I don't want to lift weights, I don't like to sweat, I don't have time ...even though I saw Jeff's results and how much he loved it.

I was never athletic, I didn’t lift weights and didn't go to a gym. I may have joined a few times but never really "worked out” or pushed myself.

Finally, one year ago I made the decision to try the Transformation Academy. I thought "its six weeks if I don't like it I won't go back". I had gotten to a point that I had to do something for myself and lose the weight I had put on over the past five years. I was out of shape, exhausted, hated to shop and didn’t like to be in pictures.

When I left class my face was beet red and I felt like I may die. I think my family was a little worried I may drop right there too! I lost weight and inches and that was enough for me to keep going back! I changed the way I ate too. Cold turkey and hardcore! No more fast food, cut out soda and all the junk food. I started to really look forward to the classes.

I can honestly say that the TA was the best way to get started. Oscar made a huge impact on all of us in that class. If it wasn’t for the encouragement and the push to do more when I didn't think I could, I wouldn't have stuck with it.

I feel like I have come a long way in a short amount of time. I know now how wrong I was about my impression of CrossFit. It is not a competition on who is doing more weight or more reps. It is about pushing yourself to be better and striving to be healthier. I am doing things now that I didn’t think I would, or could ever do. Friends and family ask me all the time “who are you?!” because I am not the same person I was before. I truly enjoy CF, eating healthy and running……….running!?! I did a couple 5ks, Go St. Louis Relay Marathon (6 mi leg) and now I’m registered for the MO Cowbell half marathon. This is not the same Doreen!

TNT is the best because of the coaches! All of you are encouraging, supportive and sincerely interested in everyone doing their personal best. Thank you to each of you for making me feel comfortable walking in the door at a time that was an all-time low. Who knew….exercise really does make things better!
