July Athlete of the Month - Caleb Cox

I never used to work out. I hated going to the gym or weight room to lift. I’ve always been tall and thin and not very strong, so I was always self-conscious curling 20# dumbbells next to the guys curling the 80s. I played a lot of sports to stay active instead. I played baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, and volleyball growing up and I felt like that that was enough of a workout. I always hated taking my shirt off to swim though cause I didn’t think my four-pack was much to show off.

I remember the first time I ever tried Crossfit. I was visiting my then-girlfriend, now-wife, and she and her roommate had been doing Crossfit. I decided that I would go with them and try it out. I was in college and playing lacrosse at that time so I figured how hard would it be? I was a lacrosse player, I had endurance! It was some sort of Chipper and halfway through the workout, I had to go outside and throw up. Multiple times. That day I decided I would never do Crossfit again.

Well after I moved to St. Louis, I started lifting weights in the small weight room that is on Concordia Seminary’s campus. I did it pretty consistently but got really bored. So I decided, what the heck, let’s try Crossfit again. I started at Crossfit St. Louis and fell in love with the workouts. Then when I got my internship last August at the church out here in St. Charles, Rochelle invited me to try TNT. Once I started coming here, I fell in love with this place. The results and improvements that I’ve seen while working out here are ridiculous and every day I look forward to getting better.

I started hearing about this Athlete of the Month deal and thought that that was a really cool thing we do here. I decided that my goal for the year that I would be working out at TNT was to be the Athlete of the Month. Well the months came and went and I saw a ton of improvement in myself. But I still wasn’t Athlete of the Month. I started wondering what I would have to do to make the cut! I mean, my last month here is July so I was running out of time! But then Ro called me over one day and told me that I was chosen to be July’s AoM and I felt so honored! (We’ll just ignore the coincidence that it just so happens to be my last month at TNT. I’m just gonna tell myself that I earned it.)

Working out at TNT with all of you has been one of the highlights of my year here in St. Charles. While the coaches are obviously amazing, my favorite part has been the blood, sweat, and tears that I’ve shed side-by-side with all of you. I’ve never seen a group of people more supportive than our box. There’s no doubt in my mind that TNT is a family and I’m going to miss this family that you all welcomed me into. I’m going to enjoy every second of my last month with you all. Let’s show those weights who’s boss!

Thanks, Ro!
